Botox and pregnancy

I am often asked ‘Is Botox safe during pregnancy?’ The easy and clear answer is – No!

Whilst it is highly unlikely to cause problems, it would be absolutely unforgiveable if there were any unfortunate consequences. No manufacturer would condone use in pregnancy – it’s just not worth it. So best to look at all the alternatives that will help you to look your best.

Botox and pregnancy do not go well together

The first of these, obviously, is to stop smoking – Smoking is bad news for the face and for the lungs, let alone the baby!

There are a lack of controlled studies into the effects of Botox on pregnant women and their unborn children, therefore it is impossible to say conclusively either way whether it is safe. For the sake of erring on the side of caution, Botox’s manufacturers recommend that it is not used on either pregnant women or nursing mothers. As with the effects during pregnancy, there is a lack of information on whether Botox injections can pass the toxin into breast milk.

How safe is botox to use during pregnancy? and what about Botox while trying to get pregnant.

Several studies have been conducted on the effects of Botox on pregnant rodents and rabbits – with worrying results – but it should be noted that animal studies do not always give a reliable picture of a drugs effect on a human. The levels of Botox administered to the test subjects are also far higher than the doses which would normally be given to a human patient, whether for cosmetic or medicinal purposes. When it was injected into the muscles of mice and rats, results showed a link between high levels of Botox and low birth weight or problems with foetal bone development. In rabbits, high doses – administered over a period of several days during a crucial period of foetal development – led to spontaneous abortions (miscarriage) and foetal malformation.

Botox during pregnancy

Due to the potential link with increased risk of miscarriage and problems with foetal development it is inadvisable to undergo Botox injections while pregnant if they are purely for cosmetic purposes. Doctors advise that if the mother-to-be received a Botox injection just prior to conception or early during the first trimester that the risk to the baby is low as the toxin is unlikely to circulate in the body at high enough levels to cause harm, but that the injection should not be repeated until post-partum. If Botox is being used for medical reasons it is the mother-to-be’s responsibility to weigh up the potential risks to the foetus against the problems that may be experienced if treatment is stopped.

Botox and forehead lines

Hi – Dr Raymond Lister here.

I have to say that I find Botox most impressive in the upper face – and particularly for forehead lines. However wrinkles on the forehead, or forehead lines, are not without their challenges.

One of the major problems here is that the muscle that we are treating, (called the Frontalis muscle) is rather important in holding the eyebrows up!

S0 – although we DO want to weaken the Frontalis, we also want to preserve the part that holds the eyebrows up – An eyebrow droop is not an attractive sight, and there is not much that can be done for it, other than wait the 3-4 months for the Botox to wear off.  There is one very important place where your physician should NOT be injecting you and that is Read the rest of this entry »

Anti wrinkle treatments

Anti wrinkle treatments, and getting rid of wrinkles

You will of course know that the search to cure wrinkles has occupied men and women for milenia.

Creams and potions have existed since history has been recorded.

There are, quite simply four main ingredients:

1.Avoidance of Sun and smoke

2. Moisture and skin fullness

3. Good genetics

4. Avoidance of muscular contracture

1.Avoidance of Sun and smoke

The first of these is just common sense – we know beyond doubt that the sun damages and prematurely ages skin. Why do we do it? Because it is pleasurable and we feel better when bronzed. The simple answer is a regular sun screen which includes a tanning agent if required.  Avoidance of smoking – please don’t get a doctor started on that one!

2.Moisture and skin fullness

A good skin care programme is essential to keep the skin hydrated. As the skin looses volume with the passage of time, fillers may be called for, and these can be very effective at plumping up the skin. These can be used anywhere in the face but are most commonly used in the cheeks, and around the lips and mouth.

3. Good genetics

Probably a bit late to do anything about this one!

4. Avoidance of muscular contraction.

It makes obvious sense that a piece of leather (or skin) that is constantly being scrunched up (as in laughter, anger or frowning) will begin to become permanently creased and lined. It makes equal sense that if we manage to calm the muscles, the same piece of skin (or leather!) will stay in the unlined condition in which we inherited it. This is why Botox is such a splendid thing. It calms the muscles down, giving the skin a chance to relax and regenerate, and gradually erase wrinkles. Regular treatment is a truly preventative treatment – probably the best wrinkle treatment available today.

Is botox painful?

I would be lying to say it didnt hurt, but it’s not that bad. In my experience patients tolerate it very well, and I am able to carry on a normal converstaion with them whilst injecting. I use ice to slightly numb the skin – I wrap it in a latex glove and it definitely seems to help. Some doctors use Emla cream which is a local anaesthetic. Whilst this does help, it is quite an effort and needs to be applied for at least 30 minutes before treatment and therefore prolongs the waiting time in the clinic.  In my experience ice (and gentle music ! ) is quite sufficient.

Filler injections do tend to be slightly more uncomfortable however, and I usually offer a local anaesthetic for these. Indeed many fillers now come with local anaesthetic already added to them. Injections around the lips can be very painful and usually I offer a proper dental block to numb the lips fully.

Is botox worth it?

Only you can judge that, but it is certainly worth at least one treatment. I find that patients are very anxious for their first treatment, and are very worried they will be left ‘frozen’ and like a ‘ wind tunnel’. Good Botox treatment should NOT give this effect and it is wonderful to see patients return for their second treatment and hear how delighted they are.  As to whether it is worth it – It depends on your bank balance, your time schedule, how bad your fine lines and wrinkles are, and whether premature wrinkles  are acceptable to you! The reason many celebrities have good skin is down to regular, and repeated, anti wrinkle injections over many years.

Botox for jowls

Nefertiti - A perfect jaw line!

Botox for jowls – Can Botox help improve jowls? Is Botox OK for jowls?

Now this is a great new use of Botox. You know where the jowls are, and if you have them you are probably rather resigned to them. Botox can help here. It quite simply changes the balance of the muscular struggle on the jaw line.

Jowl treatment to restore you to Queen Nefertiti

Will Botox help on jowls?

Botox weakens thos muscles that drag the skin downwards towards the neck, and therby comparitively strengthens the upward pulling muscles. It is not a miracle, but it can have quite a marked effect at restoring a youthful jawline.

The procedure is called the Nefertiti Lift, after the famed beauty of Queen Nefertiti. I am not sure if she had a great jaw line, and I am certainly not sure what she would feel about donating her name to a Botox treatment!

It involves 2-3 injections just below the jaw line – Give it a try!

Botox for men

Botox is equally effective for men. I see many men who find they are frowning too much, and it is giving them an angry appearance. It sometimes mean they dont do well at job interviews, or dont get the contract they were seeking.

Men have bigger muscles than women (and tougher skin!) and therefore usually need a higher dose. Most physicians charge extra for men because they quite simply need a higher dose of  Botox.
