Botox and forehead lines
Hi – Dr Raymond Lister here.
I have to say that I find Botox most impressive in the upper face – and particularly for forehead lines. However wrinkles on the forehead, or forehead lines, are not without their challenges.
One of the major problems here is that the muscle that we are treating, (called the Frontalis muscle) is rather important in holding the eyebrows up!
S0 – although we DO want to weaken the Frontalis, we also want to preserve the part that holds the eyebrows up – An eyebrow droop is not an attractive sight, and there is not much that can be done for it, other than wait the 3-4 months for the Botox to wear off. There is one very important place where your physician should NOT be injecting you and that is the area just above the lateral eyebrow.
How do we avoid this problem? We make sure we keep our frontalis injections quite high and we definitely try to avoid the classic droop territory, which is the area just above the lateral eyebrows. Wrinkles here might have to be dealt with using fillers rather than paralysis of the muscle.
Wrinkles on the forehead respond very well however, and forehead lines will soften well. Patients need to understand that there are two things going on here – The IMMEDIATE effects of Botox, which are obvious for all to see (ie a smoother forehead and less forehead wrinkles), but also a LATE or CHRONIC effect which comes from repeated regular injections – This is the benefit seen by someone who has 2-3 treatments per year over several years . These people are giving their Frontalis muscle a complete permanent holiday, and it is these patients who are freeing their forehead from endless wrinkling. The forehead is permanently rested and lines will definitely soften and disappear – a truly preventative treatment.
Take home message: Avoid injections just above the lateral eyebrow, and have regular treatments 2-3 times per year for a long term avoidance of the forehead wrinkles associated with ageing.
